We are Reflecting on the Past for a Better Future
Working to educate Lafayette countians and beyond regarding the history and continuing effects of lynching and racial violence, with justice at the heart of all we do.
Since 2017, a diverse group of Lafayette County community members has worked together as part of what’s now known as the Lafayette Community Remembrance Project (LCRP). Our mission began as an honest investigation into the history of lynching in this county. Over the past few years, it has grown into a public history project to memorialize the murdered men and their stories.
The LCRP is part of a nationwide effort to confront this tragic history of racial violence and injustice, creating local awareness and fostering truthful conversations about this historical trauma as a way to promote and encourage racial justice.
The LCRP collaborates with several partners within the local community as well as state and national organizations, including the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Alluvial Collective (formerly the William Winter Institute of Racial Reconciliation), based in Jackson, Mississippi.
Our Values
Reconciliation, Healing, & Unity. We move to unearth racial injustices and chart a path toward healing & atonement.
Truth-Telling. We create spaces to share history that has been ignored or buried.
Awareness. We bear witness to a more complete history and its legacies today.
Inclusion. We believe that our community is stronger when all voices and experiences are acknowledged and honored. Our work is rooted in shared leadership.
