The mission of the Lafayette Community Remembrance Project is to educate Layette countians and beyond regarding the history and continuing efforts of lynching and racial violence, with justice at the heart of all we do. Our values of reconciliation, healing, and unity, truth-telling, awareness, and inclusion guide our work in the focus areas of tribute & memorialization, education & advocacy, research & history-gathering, and community-& bridge-building.

  • Goal 1: To memorialize documented victims of racialized violence.

    Objective 1: Collect at least one soil samples each year for the remaining three documents victims in Lafayette County until all soil samples have been collected by December 31, 2025.

    Objective 2: Place at least one market a year for all seven documented victims of lynching in Lafayette County, until all markers are installed by December 31, 2029.

    Objective 3: Install the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) duplicate monument in Lafayette County by December 31, 2025, once EJI released the monuments.

    Objective 4: Place the existing four jars of soil in the collection of Burns Belfry Museum by March 31, 2024, and place the remaining jars of soil still to be collected by January 31, 2026.

    Objective 5: Support sites of memorial in digital formats through our website by August 31, 2023, QR codes by March 31, 2024, and a digital walking tour by December 31, 2024.

    Goal 2: To take measures of repair for descendant family members.

    Objective 1: Research and recommendation or reparative approaches for descendant family members, starting with the Higginbottom descendant great-grandchildren and younger by June 30, 2024, or December 31, 2024.

    Goal 3: To take measures of repair for community members most impacted.

    Objective 1: Begin a process of envisioning what measures of repair at the community level might look like – beyond what we’ve done and are doing in the historical and memorialization sense.

    Goal 4: Nurture a network of communities and groups doing memorialization work in Mississippi.

    Objective 1: Compile a list with contact information of other active or potential groups throughout Mississippi doing memorialization work by September 30, 2023, reach out to them by December 31, 2023.

    Objective 2: Host a gathering to connect different communities doing this work or those interested in doing it by Summer or Fall 2024.

  • Goal 1: Share stories of documented victims in Lafayette County

    Objective 1: Starting in the fall 2023, host regularly scheduled public community events that will provide a space for the community to learn more and create dialogue around the history of racial violence in Lafayette County.

    Goal 2: Convene communities in North Mississippi interested in doing memorialization work.

    Objective 1: Starting in Summer 2023, engage with neighboring communities to share about our process for memorialization work in Lafayette County and support their ability to do the same in their home counties.

    Goal 4: Identify opportunities to work with youth and engage in practices of storytelling and truth telling.

    Objective 1: In fall 2023, work with Coach Johnson at Oxford Middle School to identify opportunities to engage with students in his history class in storytelling practices as a means of further developing their skills to engage in difficult conversations.

  • Goal 1: To thoroughly document the history of racial terror lunching in Lafayette County, Mississippi.

    Objective 1: To archive primary and supporting documents and evidence of the history of lynching in Lafayette County on the website by November 30, 2023 and announce its availability to the public on December 15, 2023.

    Objective 2: To collect and share community and histories about the history of lynching and the history of the LCRP by archiving existing oral histories on the website by November 30, 2023 and develop a timeline and schedule for collective additional oral histories that will be added to the website. Apply for the Mississippi Humanities Council oral history grant by September 2024.

    Objective 3: To expand the research base on the seven documented victims in Lafayette County and add to the general research on racial violence in Lafayette County and surrounding areas.

    Goal 2: To expand the research capacity of others in our community and other communities.

    Objective 1: Host one to two research workshops per year starting in 2024 to share the tools and techniques for researching the histories of racialized violence.

    Objective 2: Put together a PDF / web tutorial by June 30, 2024 to share a step-by-step instructional on how to conduct memorialization research.

    Objective 3: Develop a Community of Practice (CoP) around reach and racial terror lynching in Mississippi.

    Goal 3: To locate and communicate with descendent family members.

    Objective 1: Develop an outreach approach to find and maintain contact information for descendant family members of Lafayette County lynching victims.
